BALLARAT SCHOOL OF MINES - Physical Description 1
This building, constructed in 1899 for the School of Mines is a typical two storey red brick educational building of the turn of the century. It is substantially intact, apart from the paintwork (the front elevation has been sandblasted), the entrance door 'and the removal of the roof finials.
There is nothing particularly remarkable about the composition - the street facades divided into 5 bays, with paired and tripled rectangular windows with segmental heads and hood moulds. However, it provides an important streetscape element to this section of Lydiard Street, and is in good condition. It is of local interest as the School of Mines has had a long history and has played an important part in the spread of mining expertise to elsewhere in Australia.
