STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE
The Newtown Methodist Church opened on 22 May, 1859, as one of the earliest and most substantial of the structures erected by the Wesleyan Methodist in the first two decades of settlement in Victoria. The austere, simple hall church survives intact to illustrated the secular nature of Wesleyan Methodist Church architecture of the 1850's. The open roof structure of the interior is reputedly of interest. This Norman Romanesque Style Church, of unknown design origin, was constructed by Pile and Brimblecombe using Marnockvale basalt to replace and earlier primitive brick building of 1849.
