St John of God Hospital - Intactness
INTACTNESS: tower and facade intact. Fence original
St John of God Hospital - Physical Description 2
The southern wing, tower and fence were completed in 1883 for Mr William Bailey as a private residence. Bailey arrived in Port Phillip in 1848 and worked as an overseer on a sheep station before joining in the gold rushes in 1851, after which he "has engaged in mining pursuits. He then became a land owner and bred merino sheep at his Terrinallum (sic.) station. The residence, including fencing, cost over!. 14,000 and the building was constructed entirely by Ballarat skill and labour the architects being Casslli and Figgis.
At a later date the northern wing was constructed to balance the southern wing and possibly at the same t.ime the original two storied cast iron verandah and balcony was replaced by the existing heavier verandah of giant order doric columns rising through two storeys at the verandah bays with single storey doric and ionic columns supporting the. rest of the verandah.
More recently the slate roof has been replaced by an unsympathetic tile roof, the front door has been replaced, there has been some alterations to doorways, and various additions have detracted from the building.
The most imposing surviving element of the original house is the central tower. This is intact except for the intrusive aluminium and glass front entrance. The tower comprises giant Corinthian engaged column rising through two storeys supporting a plain frieze surmounted by a dentillated cornice. Above this the same elements are repeated to be capped by a oalustraded parapet front entrance
Between the columns are: on the ground floor a flat arched entranceway, flanked by Corinthian pilasters, originally containing a pair of bolection moulded doors; at first floor level a triple. window motif with arched heads. The tower sections contain casement windows on each face above a balcony and surmounted by a tympanum decorated with a shell motif.
The house itself is of simple design with the facade relieved by a two storey, three sided bay projection in each wing. The window openings are all simple, plain rectangles. The ornate chimneys remain intact.
The tile roof and the modern attached buildings detract from the building, but it is still an important local landmark and an important streetscape component enhanced by the intact fence along Drummond Street.
