Statement of Significance
What is significant?
The former Brickmakers' Arms Hotel to the extent of the surviving c.1927 fabric of the facade wall is significant. The Classical Revival detailing is an important feature of the surviving fabric.
How is it significant?
The former Brickmakers' Arms Hotel is of local historic andsocial significance to the City of Moonee Valley.
Why is it significant?
Historically and socially, this was the second hotel on the site along Mt Alexander Road and near the former brick pits and kilns now known as Glen Street Reserve. Its prominent corner location is a strong reminder of the waves of suburban development that took place along major access routes and the development of hotels as community meeting places. BRICKMAKERS' ARMS HOTEL (FORMER) - Physical Description 1
As noted in the History the hotel was significantly damaged in a fire in early 2007 and further demolition resulted in the loss of all but the wall facing Mt Alexander Road. When the building was originally assessed the shell of the building (i.e., the outer walls and parts of the roof) remained. However, much of this has been removed as a consequence of the redevelopment.
The hotel, as constructed in 1927,belongs to the Inter-War Mediterranean style (circa 1915 - circa 1940) which is related to the Classical Revival style but has a much more restrained display of materials and detail. The hotel displayed a general classical feel but without the obvious typical characteristics of the more elaborate examples of this style. The walls are made of textured cement render, originally light coloured but since overpainted in a dark colour. The parapet is simple but contains simplified references to classical elements such as the pediment and entablature in a much stripped back expression.
Elements that were lost in the fire included:
-the vertically proportioned double-hung timber windows are vertically proportioned.
- the roof, which consisted of traditional timber construction clad in Marseille terracotta tiles.
- internal floor construction, which was typical for commercial construction of the period with an upper floor of traditional timber construction and a ground floor of a concrete reinforced slab.Heritage Study and Grading
