St Pauls Cathedral - Veterans Description for Public
St Paul's Cathedral, on the corner of Flinders and Swanston Streets in Melbourne, contains numerous memorials to indviduals and groups with military or wartime associations with the cathedral, dating from colonial Victoria. These include siginificant figures in Victorian and Australian military history, as well as memorials to HMAS Australia and the Korean War. The memorials are located on the east and west walls. A memorial of note is the battlefield wooden cross brought from the grave of an unknown soldier, one of the many temporary crosses erected over soldiers' graves, but perhaps the only one brought home.
St Paul's Cathedral was consecrated on 21 January 1891. The cathedral was designed by English architect William Butterfiled, who never came to Melbourne and resigned in 1884. The cathedral was completed by Melbourne's leading architect of public buildings, Jospeh Reed.
