Kensington RAAF Memorial - Veterans Description for Public
In 2003, the Kensington RAAF Memorial Plaque was erected near Macaulay Railway Station, about 4 kilometres from the centre of Melbourne. It states that on 4 September 1943, RAAF Vultee Vengeance A27-76, piloted by Flight Lieutenant Richard Henry Roe DFC and Pilot Officer James Noel Harris failed to recover from an inverted position and crashed in Kensington. Both were killed.
The aircraft originating from RAAF Laverton, was taking part in an air display at nearby Flemington Racecourse when control was lost because of equipment malfunction and that it crashed on buildings in the vicinity, killing the crew. Macaulay is a heavily built-up inner industrial suburb of Melbourne. The aircraft was dropping flour bags into a target at Flemington racecourse in an event to raise money for war bonds, and failed to come out of a roll. It crashed into Central Spring Works, on the site where the memorial now stands.
Roe, from Benalla, was awarded a Distinguished Flying Cross while serving with 30 Squadron earlier in 1943. Harris, 25, was from Prahran. They are buried in Springvale War Cemetery.
