Ashby Primary School - Physical Description 1
The building complex is composed of red brick walls and terra cotta tiled gabled roofs. The roof cladding was originally slate. The design is typical of State schools of the period and there are many finer examples which are extant. The original windows were mostly paired, narrow, and with pointed arches. Some of these still exist and can be seen in the accompanying photo. The architectural drawings which show the proposed alterations in 1911 also outline the original windows. These windows are very similar to those on Coburg State School which was designed by the architect H.R. Baston in 1874.
