Terrace Houses - Physical Description 1
This pair of semi-detached houses is presented as one totally unified composition of the palazzo form. The ground floor has drafted masonry with arched window and door openings with the voussoirs drafted in, a simple frieze, and a narrow dentillated cornice. There are two 6 panelled bolection moulded doors with glazed lunette transoms above. The piano nobile has alternating segmental and triangular pedimented heads over the windows (supported on a pair of brackets), simple sash windows, a plinth moulding interrupted by the window openings, between which are the window guards with criss cross decoration and a central rosette. Capping the top of the building is again a line of dentillation, eaves brackets, and then the simple parapet which may have been capped by urns or vases.
This building is of great significance as a Renaissance revival palazzo composition Similar detached and continuous terraces were constructed in East Melbourne, but this provides the best example of a consistent Renaissance revival terrace design
The building is intact, is in good condition and provides an important streetscape element.
