Statement of Significance
STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE
5 Balliang Street has architectural significance at a local level. The building is a typical and representative example of Victorian housing with an Edwardian verandah renovation. The house is reasonably intact, retaining its characteristic form, siting and a number of original features.
This double fronted Victorian cottage has a symmetrical facade constructed of weatherboard, and a simle corrugated iron hipped roof with a skillion at the rear. The recent brick and iron fence, and brick front to the concrete varandah, are later additions which are not suited to the style and detract from the overall appearance. The bullnose verandah, carved timber posts and brackets, and verandah fence appear to be an Edwardian renovation although the cladding material is new. Typical double hung sash windows are positioned on either side of the central entrance. The door is a four panel Victorian type with sidelights and a highlight, both featuring stained glass. The residence is difficult to view from the street.
