STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE
Only the south wing of the Geelong Town Hall was erected in 1855 by Allen and Cakebread as a bluestone building with a freestone facade. Geelong Town Hall as completed in 1917 in accordance with the original designs of 1854 by Joseph Reed, is without question one of the finest Classic Greek Revival town halls in Australia and a most important early work of this famous and accomplished Victorian architect. The Town Hall is also one of the oldest in Victoria, having served continuously as the centre of local government in Geelong since 1856.
