Memorial Window Description & History
Stained Glass Window at Kew Holy Trinity Anglican Church - Memorial Window Description & History
When the apsidal Warrior's Chapel, designed by ex-serviceman and architect, Eric Teague, was added to the church in 1922, the window openings were filled with plain glass. There were plans to create a memorial to the fallen men of the parish and Brooks, Robinson & Co. were engaged to design a window, however the idea was shelved, possibly due to a lack of funding. When the Reverend A. Roscoe Wilson joined the parish as vicar in 1934, he asked his talented daughter Marian to prepare a design based on the idea of happiness in Paradise, a sharp contrast to Brooks, Robinson's design that incorporated static saints and soldiers. Miss Wilson based her design on German medieval lyrical poetry but the substantial nine-light window was not built until the 1960s. The death of prominent churchman, George Selby Knight Gregson, was the catalyst that brought the project to fruition, forty-two years after the building of the Chapel. Marble tablets placed at the east end record the names of fifty-seven men from the parish who served in the First World War. The text was taken from Hymn 295, Hymns Ancient and Modern, Standard edition.
