SMALL BLACK BULL INN - History
The former site of the Small Black Bull Inn is situated on the Moorabool River escarpment, overlooking the township of Fyansford. Its location just north of the road to Geelong probably aimed to take advantage of traffic travelling west to the gold rush. The site was known to have been present in the area after 1856. The fate of the building or approximate time frames of occupation are not known at this stage.SMALL BLACK BULL INN - Interpretation of Site
The Small Black Bull Inn (SWS_19) was located on or very near the bend at Hyland Road, Fyansford, dating from 1856. It is likely that the location of the business was targeted to catch patronage from passers-by on their way to the Western Districts and goldfields.
It is possible that the site has suffered disturbance from construction and subsequent backfilling of a formerly adjacent irrigation water storage which may have obliterated any evidence of the Inn. The water storage tank was constructed in 1900 for a neighbouring property.
An artefact scatter of 1870s material (including case gin bottles and preserves) was identified within close proximity to the Inn location.
SMALL BLACK BULL INN - Archaeological Significance
Survey revealed a small number of domestic artefacts at the former location of the Inn. It is possible that subsurface artefact deposits and traces of the building, constructed of brick, exist in this location. Disturbance from construction and backfilling of a formerly adjacent water storage tank may have obliterated any evidence of the Inn. An artefact scatter to the north of the location of the Inn contains dark olive green bottle glass including several fragmentary case bottles with blowpipe pontil scars manufactured prior to 1860. These finds, together with flint glass remains of food containers, animal bone and sherds of transfer-printed earthenwares are possibly associated with the Small Black Bull Inn. This area is considered to have high archaeological sensitivity and is likely to have associated subsurface deposits and possibly footings relating to the building.
SMALL BLACK BULL INN - Historical Significance
The site is significant for its early historical associations to living in country towns and as an early commercial establishment.
