Veterans Description for Public
Craigieburn War Memorial - Veterans Description for Public
The Craigieburn War Memorial was dedicated on 2 April 2017.
Craigieburn had a small war memorial remembrance stone laid in 1985 near a municipal building. Its location was obscure and no community ANZAC Day services had taken place in recent memory - 1960 onwards.
The Craigieburn Unit of the Victoria State Emergency Service obtained approval from Hume Council in 2007 to relocate the Memorial Stone to the SES Memorial. Craigieburn SES members, who were also RSL members, conducted the first ANZAC Day Service in 2007 with an estimated attendance of 250 people. Attendance rose to over 2,000 at the last ANZAC Day Service held at the SEs Memorial in 2016. VICSES members and local residents formed the CWMRC in December 2014 as an independent organisation for the sole purpose of raising funds to construct a new War Memorial in the new public parklands located to the North of the new Craigieburn Central Shopping Centre. The Hume Council and CWMRC joint project commenced in 2015 and progressed through fundraising, design and construction. The construction phase was between January and March 2017. The Memorial was jointly funded by Hume City COuncil ($60k); Craigieburn War Memorial and Remembrance Committee Inc. ($55k); Victorian Government (Grant - $25K); Stockland ($10K); and local business, community sporting groups and individuals ($20K).
The 2017 ANZAC Day Service was held at the Memorial with an estimated attendance of over 2,000. The primary role of the CWMRC is now to raise finance for the conduct of Remembrance Services at the Memorial in perpetuity. The Craigieburn War Memorial is owned and maintained by Hume Council.
