FORMER MECHANICS INSTITUTE - Heritage Inventory Description
Discovered during development works, artefacts included butchered animal bone, ceramics and glass. The demolition of the existing Mechanics Institute uncovered the remnants of a fire in 1926 which destroyed the original 1856 institute. It is likely that archaeological material associated with its use from 1856, are still present, however the potential to contain historical archaeological deposits related to its use prior to 1856 is unknown.
