Summary Timeline
Pre-1835: Swamp and wetland
Early Post-Contact: Swamp land and paddocks; broader area partially occupied by 'Canvas Town'.
1880: Subdivision of study area, possible period of industrial construction.
1909 - 1918: West's Theatre
1918 - 1923: Hoyt's Lyceum
1923: Demolition of Hoyt's Lyceum and construction of the YMCA Hall.
1982-3: Demolition of YMCA Hall.
2013 - Present: The land has been levelled, and the study area is now occupied by the Testing GroundsFORMER W. MORTON ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE - Archaeological Significance
Potenital fo post-contact archaeological deposits exists within the site. early use of the site for campsites (i.e. Canvas Town) is likely to have left minimal archaeological signature, however, where apparent they are likely to materialise as post holes or refuse deposits of an ephemeral nature.
Potential for archaeological deposits relating to nineteenth century structures in many contexts (i.e. industrial phase dating through the mid to late nineteenth century). Posible archaeological remains could include structural foundations, artefactural material (i.e. refuse deposts) relating to occupation and industrial use of the site and yard surfaces. Re-use of nineteenth century structures for West's Theatre.
FORMER W. MORTON ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE - Historical Significance
The site has the ability to inform on the early development of South Melbourne, including early evidence of the the Canvas Town. The sitehas strongpotential for late nineteenth century industrial sites and the establishment of Melbourne's first purpose built picture theatre -with acontinued themeas a recreational areathroughoutthe twenty-first century.
Heritage Inventory Description
FORMER W. MORTON ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE - Heritage Inventory Description
The site is currently occupied by the 'Testing Grounds' alternative artsspace within the arts precinct. This comprises a series of makeshift,impermanent structures and converted shipping containers on a concreteslab over the northern point of the study area and gravel surface elsewhere.
