RESIDENCE (FORMER MOOLAP INN) - History
The following information is reproduced from Wynd (1988):
The Moolap Inn dated to at least 1855 when Westly Boucher was granted a renewal of licence. He was followed in 1856 by Martin Priest, who died soon after. His wife Esther carried on for two years and attempted to supplement her income by leasing a well-watered paddock next to the hotel which she was willing to let out for grazing cattle at 3s. 6d. per week. She was followed by Thomas Knapp, Thomas Lawrence and William Thompson. Henry Dowling held the licence during the early 1870s but it seems to have lapsed, for in 1878 Michael Fallon was asking Council's assistance to obtain a licence for the 'old' Moolap Inn. As we have seen this was granted in 1879. Fallon was also a veterinary surgeon and probably carried on a useful business in this field in conjunction with his hotel. His wife, Mary, died in August 1880; he auctioned off his effects in September, and in October transferred the licence to Thomas Sutterby took over the licence but offered the building for sale in 1883 when it was described as:
a well built, two-storey, brick building, with slate roof, containing bar and three sitting rooms, with good dry cellar, kitchen and store room; and, on the first floor, five well finished bedrooms. There is also a good underground tank and 3-stalled stable, and about four acres of capital land with the option of other 6 acres, if desired. The house is well placed for business, and a good paying trade is being done.
The hotel does not seem to have sold. Sutterby transferred the licence to Jane Fitton for six months, took over himself at the end of 1883, but did not continue the business beyond this period. The house still stands at the corner of Moolap Station road and Queenscliff Road (Wynd 1988: 96-97).
Rates and valuations research undertaken for this assessment supports Wynd's summary with the following information obtained for the period of time when Lawrence Thompson was recorded as being the Moolap licensee.RESIDENCE (FORMER MOOLAP INN) - Archaeological Significance
The dwelling on the corner of Moolap Street and the Bellarine Highway was the Moolap Inn built in the 1850s. The building has undergone many changes but retains the bluestone cellars and other intact fabric. Based on the known history of the Moolap Inn area, there is potential for archaeological deposits associated with occupation of the site at the rear of the property. There has been little development in the area to the rear of the inn. The area currently contains a garden and shipping containers. The 1996 Bellarine Heritage Study undertaken by Huddle (1996a), indicated that there was archaeological potential associated with the inn. The site comprises the former inn building, currently a residence. There is potential for archaeological features, deposits and/or artefacts associated with the inn and its occupants to be present.

Heritage Inventory Description
RESIDENCE (FORMER MOOLAP INN) - Heritage Inventory Description
At the time of the field survey (12 July 2017) the house (former Moolap Inn) (Figure 1) was being renovated. There was a large peppercorn tree (Figure 2) in the backyard as well as a garden area which, based on the size of the peppercorn tree, it is likely to have always been an open area. There has been little development in the area to the rear of the inn. Based on the known history of the Moolap Inn area, there is potential for archaeological deposits associated with occupation of the site at the rear of the property. The 1996 Bellarine Heritage Study undertaken by Huddle (1996a), and which assessed the Moolap Inn as of local significance to be entered on the Heritage Overlay, indicated that there was archaeological potential associated with the site. However, the potential was not verified during the survey as the property was not accessed. Some of this rear area contains shipping containers and building supplies which obscure the ground surface (Figure 3). The exact nature and condition of deposits is unknown but potential archaeological deposits may include ceramic and glass sherds, metal, wood and outbuilding foundations, i.e. potential archaeological deposits relating to disposal of refuse.
