What is significant?
This group of 16 Tamarisk trees is a World War I memorial planting and is located at the Yarrawonga College P-12 Tom Street Campus.
How is it significant?
This group of Tamarisk (Tamarix aphylla) is significant for commemoration, contribution to landscape, and historic association with school and World War I at the Regional level.
Why is it significant?
These 16 Tamarisk trees were planted at Yarrawonga Primary School following the conclusion of World War I in memory of each servicemen who did not return. The group of trees make a significant contribution to the landscape and it is the only known example of Tamarisk being used as a memorial planting. A commemorative plaque and memorial was created to accompany the planting of the trees. The original plaque and memorial was constructed nearer to the school building in 1921 and was re-sitted in 1995 to its current position when an additional World War II plaque was added.
