Scout Hall (former) - Physical Description 1
The Scout Hall (former) at 19 Edward Street, Coburg comprises a single-storey weatherboard hall with north-south facing gabled roof lined with Colourbond. Projecting bays are present on both the eastern and western wings of the hall, with a central timber entrance. Front facing gable ends are lined with weatherboard. There is one tall face brick chimney along the western elevation with the chimney breast now enclosed by galvanised iron. The three windows on the front facade are timber double-hung sash, with 6 small panes to the upper window. The front door is a double board and brace timber construction with a short awning projecting out from the skillion roof above.
The building is painted in a blue and white colour scheme. It is encouraged that prior to any new paint works that a historic paint scheme analysis is undertaken to determine the most appropriate colour scheme for the former scout hall.
The site includes a substantial eucalyptus tree in the front yard which appears to be quite old. The streetscape setting on Edward Street is a mixture of interwar and postwar construction.
In 2018, a planning permit was approved for the construction of a second dwelling to the western side of the existing dwelling. This will create a dual occupancy within the one building. This work appears to be in progress though is in early stages.
The place appears to be in good condition, though in a state of renovations towards the rear of the structure. Due to the large eucalypt in the front yard, a large amount of leaf waste is present on the roof and in the guttering.Scout Hall (former) - Integrity
- New paint over time
- Rear extension
- Addition of galvanised iron structure around the chimney breast to the western elevation*
- Residential conversion, date unknown
The former scout hall has been converted into a private residence. Though the exterior appears to be largely original in form, it has been repainted and current renovations to the rear of the structure have the potential to impact the site's integrity further. The building therefore has moderate integrity overall.
* Denotes element that detracts from the cultural significance of the place.
