EASTHILL HOUSE - History
The area was developed by the mid-nineteenth century, with buildings evident on plans of the 1850s. These early buildings were demolished and replaced during the late nineteenth century with more substantial buildings, which were in turn altered or replaced during the twentieth century.
Easthill House, 71-73 Victoria Parade:
• Easthill House incorporated two c 1880s terraces.
• These terraces appear to have been built on the site of earlier timber buildings
• The site of the timber buildings appears to have incorporated a substantial masonry building to the rear, visible in an 1860s photograph
• It is possible that the rear of the Easthill House may contain some evidence of this building, depending on the extent of disturbance during the construction of the terraces and Easthill House
EASTHILL HOUSE - Interpretation of Site
Easthill House is a historic masonry and brick building. The Victoria Parade frontage consists of a large fa!;ade that extends across the entire address and fronts a large 3 storey building. The rear of the building consists of two adjacent brick extensions separated by a small courtyard with an opening to the rear car park. The western extension retains at least one basement (cellar) visible as a bricked arch at the base of the eastern wall and with an access point from beneath the stairwell of the main building. At the back of the extensions the rear wall doorways have been bricked in and suggests that they originally extended·further, probably to accommodate kitchens or laundries. Archaeological Potential The Easthill House basements(?) are likely to have removed any archaeological evidence of former structures where these basements(?) have been dug. However for the balance, given its age and fabric, the construction of this building is unlikely to have destroyed all signs of former historic buildings or other activity beneath its footprint.
Heritage Inventory Description
EASTHILL HOUSE - Heritage Inventory Description
There is an extant 3 storey building of masonry construction facing onto No. 71-73 Victoria Parade within the St Vincent's Private Hospital. The front of the building currently houses a cafe. This building is located immediately to the south of Dodgshun House (VHR H1706) and west of the 'Ancillary Service Building' for St Vincent's Private Hospital at 75 Victoria Pde, and the Former Eastern Hill Hotel (VHR H0816). The rear of the building contains small yards and extends northwards to the wall that marks the southern extent of Como House (H1706). MMBW plans indicate the presence of features including cesspits in the open areas to the north of the main buildings.
