Statement of Significance
What is significant?
The area associated with the Red Lion Hotel and associated brick residences that occupied the site from the late 1860s. There is potential for earlier features associated with a timber residence and garden underlying the remains of the hotel. The site has been subject to minor developments throughout the twentieth century but has been predominantly used by the public as a recreational reserve.
How is it significant?
The site is of historical and archaeological significance.
Why is it significant?
The site is of historical significance as the location of a hotel in Cremorne. The earlier occupation of the site is significance for its association with the development of Richmond and the City of Yarra. The site is of archaeological significance due to its potential to contain artefacts, deposits and features that relate to the establishment and operation of the residence and later 19th century hotel and commercial activities.
