Statement of Significance
What is significant?
The Former Gowar Township Archaeological Site has the potential to contain early mining occupation of Muckleford North and on route from Castlemaine to Maldon. The diggings were not rich, but business established enough that land was surveyed and sold in 1859. The site is within an open paddock and site comprises European plantings and the ruin of the Half-way Hotel to the west of the site. The site is likely to contain archaeological features, subsurface deposits and artefacts associated with the occupation and development of the township.
