STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE - CITY OF GEELONG WEST URBAN CONSERVATION STUDY
The J. F. Archibald Memorial marks the birthplace of one of Australia's most accomplished and dedicated journalists and a generous benefactor to the community. It is of regional significance.
STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE - GRC - HISTORIC PLACES DOCUMENTATION SHEET NO. 288
The J. F. Archibald Memorial marks the birthplace of one of Australia's most accomplished and dedicated Journalists, and founder of the celebrated Bulletin in 1880. The Archibald Fountain in Sydney, The Archibald Prize for portrait painting, and the Australian Journalists Association benevolent fund are also established in memory of this great Autralian writer, and as a consequence of generous bequests in the will of Jules Francois Arhcibald. Born at Kildare (North Geelong) Archibald, baptized as john Feltham (later changed to Jules Francois in a period of Francophile passion) lived only a short time in Geelong.

DESCRIPTION - CITY OF GEELONG WEST URBAN CONSERVATION STUDY
The memorial consists of a quarry faced stone base with a bronze plaque set on top. The plaque inscription reads,
"This memorial marks the site of the birthplace of Jules Feltham (Francois Archibald) January 14, 1856 - September 10, 1919. Famous Journalist and Editor, and generous friend of Australian Writers and Artists. Erected by the Australian Journalists Association in 1960".
