Statement of Significance
This precinct is significant for its distinctive nineteenth century semi-rural town character, resulting from three main nineteenth century periods of post-settlement development closely linked to the strong natural features of the two rivers, floodplains and escarpments that form the Fyansford valleys. The area is significant for a proportionally high number of extant and substantial nineteenth century places still in their historic and aesthetic context with substantial areas of land between them. These individually significant places are of a mixed design, function and materials and all maintain a picturesque form and/or setting with the natural features of the place. The various building types and subdivision in the area, residential, commercial, infrastructure and industrial, demonstrate Fyansford's population growth and decline in the nineteenth century.
There is a mixture of exotic and native trees and some tree lines provide other strong precinct characteristics and include the Norfolk Pines on the main street and the cypress trees along the Moorabool River. Significant views over the flood plains to the important rivers, from within the precinct to the natural skyline of the escarpments and from these escarpments down into the valley, strengthen this historically significant relationship with the location of the earliest official settlement in the Port Phillip District.
