Statement of Significance
National Estate Register:
The 1865 school building is of considerable interest because it was originally a Presbyterian school which was subsequently taken over by the State school system. Such schools are quite rare in Victoria owing to the fact that most State schools were purpose built by the government (Criterion B.2).
The structure is part of a group of notable buildings which forms the heart of Inverleigh. Thus, despite the addition of portable classrooms to the school grounds, the 1865 Gothic building makes an important contribution to the townscape (Criterion E.1).
The building is associated with the early history of the town and the role of the Presbyterian Church in that history (Criterion A.4).
National Trust: Statement of Significance : Interesting early school built in stone ashlar.

Inverleigh State School No 1147 (1856 building) - Physical Description 1
National Estate Register:
The bluestone building at Inverleigh State School No 1147 was constructed by the local Presbyterian Church in 1865. The cost of the mason's work was 160 pounds and the sizeable sum of 200 pounds was paid for carpentry. In 1873, with the advent of State Education, the school was taken over by the Education Department; the department paid 450 pounds for the building and furniture. The building is a single storey bluestone structure, T-shaped in plan, with the main classroom occupying the top of the T, which runs parallel to the road. A gable roof covers this section and a second gabled roof covers the leg of the T-shape, which comprises a separate room. There is a porch in the north-east corner of the T. A central fireplace serves both rooms. According to National Trust information the fireplace was not added until 1874, one of the gable end windows was added in 1876, the roof was clad with galvanised iron in 1887, the interior walls were plastered in 1898-99, the porch was lined in 1900, a shelter shed was built in 1908 and a larger window was placed in the north end of the infants room in the same year. Recent classrooms have been added to each side and the 865 building is linked to an eastern building by a breezeway.Inverleigh State School No 1147 (1856 building) - Integrity
Condition and Integrity:
The 1865 school building is in good condition and essentially intact. Evidently the floor is concrete of recent origins and this has caused a rising damp problem. (May 1988).
