Statement of Significance
What is significant?
The house at 30 Francis Street, Ascot Vale, built for William Henry Roberts in 1914, is significant. It is a picturesque Queen Anne timber villa situated on top of the Francis Street hill and incorporating many decorative elements characteristic of the style, including fretted barges, decorative half timbering, elaborate window hoods (recent?), shingled weatherboards, turned timber posted bull nosed verandah with fretted frieze and spandrels, cross braced balustrading and cement strapwork to the tall red brick chimneys.
How is it significant?
The house at 30 Francis Street, Ascot Vale is of local aesthetic significance to the City of Moonee Valley.
Why is it significant?
It is aesthetically distinguished (Criterion E) by its elaborate timber work representative of the Queen Anne period that provided the foundation for the architectural fashion that lead to the archetypal Federation villa, no. 30 Francis Street having been built quite late in the period.
