Statement of Significance
"Melola" at 33 Union Road, Ascot Vale was built for the manager, James Quigley, in 1930. It is aesthetically important. This importance (Criterion E) is derived from the unusual expression given to the Bungalow style in this instance, the faceted porch with surmounting gablet and the juxtaposition of elements common to the period being refreshing and representing an unusually picturesque resolution of the owner's requirements and extending to the corner gate, fence and garden.

HOUSE (MELOLA) - Physical Description 1
A picturesque and prominently situated Bungalow of the inter-war period, having an L-shaped form with faceted shady porch and surmounting gablet at the intersection of the two wings. The complex facade treatment includes a curved corner window bay with shingled canopy and a curved window bay with level roof to the projecting wing. The painted roughcast surfaces are relieved by clinker bricks with basket weave panels, the barges have curved terminations recalling Japanese precedents, the jerkin head gable ends are both shingled and half timbered and the roof tiles are variegated terra cotta with finials.
Condition: Sound. Integrity: High, including garden, front fence and comer wrought iron gate.
