Statement of Significance
The house at no. 5A The Strand, Moonee Ponds, was built for Herbert Carey in 1919. It has aesthetic importance. This importance (Criterion E) is derived from the manner in which the design exploits the gable theme so common to Arts and Crafts houses of the period. The Ionic Order verandah and balconette in the gable end are unusual and important contributory elements whilst the entire composition is skilfully resolved. The fence and associated hedge are also important contributory elements reinforcing the integrity of the setting whilst the dwelling's stature demonstrates the value placed on its location overlooking Queens Park and in turn impacts character to the park.
