Statement of Significance
The house at no. 5 Kiora Street, Essendon, was built for Alfred John Nott on the Kalmina Estate in 1907-08. It has historic and aesthetic importance. It is historically important (Criterion A) because it demonstrates together with other comparable houses of the period that Essendon in the vicinity of the railway station consolidated its reputation as a prestigious middle class suburban location prior to the Great War. It is aesthetically important (Criterion E) as a picturesque villa of its type, the juxtaposition of the gable ends giving emphasis to the diagonal axis in a comparatively novel manner, this aspect being a distinguishing characteristic of the Australian Federation villa, The spacious mature garden setting enhances its aesthetic values.
