LOWTHER HALL ANGLICAN GIRLS GRAMMAR SCHOOL - Physical Description 1
Earlsbrae was described as follows in 1890: The building, designed in the Corinthian style of Architecture, is of somewhat massive and imposing proportions. Along the main or western facade and returning on portions of the northern and southern, will be a collonade of 16 massive columns, the principal entrance doorway being centrally situated in the western front and having a projecting portico, surmounted by a pediment. From the main doorway, the vestibule and hall, will lead to a central staircase hall, 24 feet square, carried up through the interior and finished with an ornamentally glazed, panelled and enriched dome... '.
Typically the upper-level was to be 'boudoirs' and above that a promenade floor constructed on the roof. Aedicules at external windows and pedimented over doors, internally, added to the grand nature of the design.
A gravelled carriage sweep, was then enclosed by a dense planting of shrubbery whilst the cypress row (recently removed) probably evolved from planting early this century.
Viewed from the street, little appears to have changed but enclosure of part of the side verandah and painting of the stucco under the upper verandah are evidence.
