Statement of Significance
"Montclair" at 91 Holmes Road, Moonee Ponds, was built for Margaret Richardson in 1911. It is of historic and aesthetic importance. Its historic importance (Criterion A) lies in its capacity to demonstrate the attraction of Moonee Ponds and the high ground west of Moonee Ponds railway station in particular as a sought after residential location prior to the Great War. Its aesthetic importance (Criterion E) is established by "Montclair's" highly picturesque design expressive of the hallmarks of the Federation Period villa and its English and American antecedents. These include the picturesque roof massing and corner tower, leadlit window bays, the use of rough cast and decorative joinery.

HOUSE (MONTCLAIR) - Physical Description 1
A picturesque Federation Period villa distinguished by the manner in which the corner tower and faceted verandah address the Hopetoun Street corner. The dominant element is the pyramidal slate roof with terra cotta ridge tiles and finials, gables, dormer and conical tower emphasising the diagonal axis. Tall red brick chimneys with rough cast terminations and terra cotta pots are characteristic of the period. Turned timber posts support the generous verandah which has graceful curved spandrets and Arts and Crafts ornamentation. Corner window bays have lead light work and the upper section of the red brick walls are in rough cast.
