TWEEDSIDE HOUSE - Physical Description 1
A double-fronted stuccoed (smooth rustication) masonry house of many wings, with a timber verandah and slated, simply hipped roof. Wings at the rear, extend to the west, around what was probably once a traditional courtyard but has since been filled in as a ballroom (now used for billiards). Open and solid, panelled timber supports at the verandah, the zinc-sheet verandah roof, the simple main roof line and conservative, coved chimney cornice, suggest an early date for this house (c1860) however high skirtings, ceiling roses, ornate marble mantels and both sub- floor and room ventilators indicate reconstruction late 19th century. Nearby is a weather boarded stable and coachhouse which has fine, gently gabled form and scalloped barge board with finial. This is not shown on plans of 1907; the stables being detached and to the north west. Of note is the scotch thistle on the entrance toplight, with latin dulcius ex asperis, the crest of its Scotch owner (Ferguson).
Internally there are many white marble mantels, ceiling roses in most rooms, a marble bath and enclosure, a marble washstand, indications of former verandahs (marble and slate tiled floors) and former external walls (shutter catches), a cellar with fire place, wood graining doors, and the monitor roofed board-lined billiard room, complete with gas light pendant, sand-blasted glazed and stencilled dado frieze. Recent removal of a cornice has revealed a painted frieze from an earlier decorative scheme.
The unusual iron perimeter fence was reputedly relocated from the Flemington Racecourse and other panels exist in a nearby property.
Streetscape
Perceivable as prior to the general subdivision by its style, orientation and setback.TWEEDSIDE HOUSE - Integrity
The verandahs have been enclosed on the north and south, together with the early replacement of the rear verandah with the 'ballroom'; the verandah eaves has been covered with a splayed member; the chimneys have been altered; numerous intrusive service lines have been added; and adjoining, is a new garage. Internally, many superficial alterations have been made whilst embossed wall papers from c1920 are of interest in their own right. Generally including many construction stages which nevertheless possess some visual commonality.
