Statement of Significance
SIGNIFICANCE: »One of the Moderne rows of shops in Gray Street which supports the more important larger shops. A fraternal pair with its neighbour.
STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE
Krugers
230-232 Gray Street
This building has local significance for its use of tiles and glass in its clerestory, and for its historical associations with the Dempster family. By the late 1940s it was owned by Mrs R B Webster and occupied by A V Clutterbuck. ([i]) Mrs Dempster was quite likely to have been related to J A Dempster, owner of the adjacent Dempster's Store at 222-228 Gray Street, and to E C Dempster, pharmacist and Mayor. ([ii]) The architects are not known but Silverwood and Beck may have been the designers. The building stands on land first purchased by D Cameron, 18 February 1852 and is thus one of the oldest sites in Hamilton. The building is very significantly intact and in excellent condition.
