Statement of Significance
SIGNIFICANCE: Excellent integrity including the interiors, the building complements the others built in Gray Street in the 1930s.
STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE
Dempster's
222-228 Gray Street
This building was constructed in 1939 or earlier. ([i]) It has local significance for the architectural interest of its significantly intact shopfronts and interiors and for its historical associations with Mr J A Dempster, storekeeper. ([ii]) It is quite likely that he was related to Mr E C Dempster, pharmacist and Hamilton Mayor. ([iii]) There were additions made to Dempster's Store in 1958. It is now vacant but retains its integrity and is in good condition. The architect is not known and was probably not Seabrook and Fildes but the shops were probably built by Reg Williams who was a prolific builder at the time. The shops complement the many other buildings constructed in the commercial part of Gray Street between the wars.
