Statement of Significance
SIGNIFICANCE: »Regional ambulance station designed in a vernacular domestic style compatible with its surroundings.
STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE
Ambulance Station
Foster Street (corner of Clarendon St)
Built in 1955 on land originally reserved for hospital purposes, the ambulance station is of local significance for its architecture and social historical associations. It is designed in a domestic vernacular style which is appropriate for the predominantly residential area around the hospital. This is achieved through the use of specific materials, such as cream brick for the walls and weatherboards in the gables, through certain details such as the chimney (and TV antenna) and through the low scale and form. The fuctionalism of the ambulance station's planning is also important. Its construction marked the beginning of a modern ambulance service which complements the hospitals regional role in general.
The building is significantly intact and in good condition. It is an important contributor to the streetscape especially with the way it is sited on a corner and takes advantage of the topography.
