Ailsa Street - Physical Description 1
Ailsa Street is a residential precinct comprising houses of the late Inter-war period. The houses are mostly single storey and detached with the exception of nos. 20-24, which comprises a pair of two-storey maisonettes, and have roofs clad with cement or glazed terracotta, Marseilles pattern tiles. The Moderne influence upon domestic architecture of the mid to late Inter-war period is demonstrated in many of the dwellings by stucco render with decorative brick 'stream lines', prominent porches with concealed roofs and rounded wall corners, and stepped brick and render chimneys. The Moderne influence can also be seen in the similarly styled houses at nos. 5 and 9 that are a hybrid of that style and English Domestic Revival, which is demonstrated by the clinker brick detailing. No.7, on the other hand,is a more traditionally styled bungalow with Arts & Crafts detailing including the prominent gabled porch with a brick arch and shingling to the gable ends. The maisonettes at 20-22 Ailsa Street are the most substantial and stylistically sophisticated of the houses with corner and porthole windows and wrought iron balconies.
The houses are complemented by original garages either attached (e.g. No.15) or detached (e.g. 11, 13), low brick or cyclone wire front fences with wrought gates, and low cyclone wire return side fences in the front setback area and many have typical inter-war garden layouts, with a predominance of standard roses lining serpentine concrete pathways, lawns and symmetrically placed columnar cypress at doorways. Hedges are also used on both chain wire fences and elsewhere in the gardens. Most have a side driveway comprising parallel concrete strips separated by grass. The houses are all in good condition and have a very high degree of integrity when viewed from the street. The similar styling of many of the houses, which creates a visually homogenous streetscape, suggest that they are the work of a single designer-builder.
