Statement of Significance
What is significant?
The dwellings at 17 Long Street and 10 Roughead Street, Leongatha, constructed in 1891 and c.1894 respectively, are significant. These buildings are both simple double-fronted late Victorian villas, however 17 Long Street is made of weatherboard and 10 Roughead Street is made of local bricks. Both of these buildings have a hip and valley roof and straight verandah, supported by stop chamfered posts. Both these buildings also feature double hung windows on either side of the central front door, with 17 Long St including a sidelight.
At 17 Long Street, Leongatha, the decorative elements of the property remain, including cast iron brackets and the wrapping of the verandah around the street side of the house. There is a limited skillion section at the rear of the building along with a gabled weatherboard shed.
10 Roughead Street, is an early brick building and has been painted.
Non-original alterations and additions are not significant.
How is it significant?
The houses at 17 Long Street and 10 Roughead Street are of historic and aesthetic significance to the South Gippsland Shire. 10 Roughead Street is also significant for its technological significance to the Shire.
Why is it significant?
Historically, these two dwellings are two of the oldest extant buildings in Leongatha and amongst the oldest in the South Gippsland Shire. They demonstrate the basic nature of the commercial-based buildings on the Northern side of the railway line in Leongatha. The former Mrs. Maher's Dining Rooms (17 Long St) is one of a small number of commercial buildings on the northern side of the Railway line, and 10 Roughead Street was next to a commercial building in the same area (Haynes Store). (Criterion A)
10 Roughead Street is believed to be the oldest extant brick dwelling in Leongatha and a rare early example of a brick dwelling within the Shire, due to the poor availability of brick materials prior to World War I. (Criteria A and F)
Aesthetically, these buildings are somewhat altered, however they significantly contribute to the historic character of Long Street and Roughead Street, and the northern part of Leongatha. (Criterion E)
