Statement of Significance
Coronal, 9 Lewes Drive, East Malvern, is a two storey former mansion with tower constructed in 1890. It enjoys high local significance as a rare surviving house from a small group of mansion estates that once existed in the area, surrounded by farm land. It is thought to be the only towered nineteenth century mansion surviving in East Malvern, and would seem to be the easternmost surviving, substantially intact representative of the nineteenth century mansions which once ranged across the present Stonnington area from South Yarra to East Malvern, contributing substantially to the character and prestige of the area. It stands in relative isolation with resprect to its peers within the municipality.
Coronal is distinct from other extant mansions in the municipality through its use of a relatively severe architectural expression based on vernacular Italian antecedents and simple, face brick construction.
Alterations undertaken in 1939 in order to convert the house to flats have resulted in relatively slight, superficial changes to its overall character, but have allowed it to integrate to a superior extent with the general interwar character of Lewes Drive, and as such is the centrepiece of its immediate built environment.

CORONAL - Physical Description 1
Lewes Drive, East Malvern, is a short cul de sac springing from the north side of Waverly Road, east of the intersection with Darling Road. The street comprises a group of interwar houses dominated by Coronal, an early mansion, at the head of the street. Prominently sited a on a rise, Coronal overlooks the street and beyond to areas of Caulfield and Bentleigh.
As discussed above, Coronal is a two-storey former mansion which was converted to flats in 1939.
Although the size of its grounds has diminished over time, it still occupies a substantial block with well-maintained lawns and shrubs. The house consists of an informal combination of building masses grouped around a three-storey comer tower. It was originally constructed in face brick with a low-pitched, overhanging roof of slate and simple, round-headed windows in a manner that recalled Italian vernacular buildings. However, the refurbishment in 1939 included the painting of the exterior to more closely emulate the contemporary Spanish Mission style. This exterior treatment remains today. The two-storey sections of the house are treated simply. To the Lewes Drive front a 1939 arched entry is flanked by an original latticed loggia with tiled roof. Fenestration at first floor level consists of a regular arrangement of simple round headed windows recalling Romanesque antecedents. The tower is equally understated in its treatment, although some decorative brickwork in the form simple corbel tables and balustrade features are incorporated into the design.CORONAL - Local Historical Themes
