Statement of Significance
Little is known historically about the house but its evident age and site orientation suggest it played a role in the early alluvial mining era at California Gully. It is among a small and dwindling group of early gold-era cottages in the Eaglehawk- Bendigo area, built from the basic material available in the locality and addressing street frontages which no longer exist.

Building - Physical Description 1
Double-fronted and of mud brick and stucco, this simple gabled roof cottage faces away from Wood Street towards distant Dowding Street (and former California Gully mining area) accentuating its pre-subdivision origin. The hipped concave verandah roof has timber posts (with some capitals), ogee profile guttering and a distinctive scrolled timber valence.
Building - Integrity
External - The rear wall roof line has been altered for an added rear skillion; the walls have been slurried over and painted; the chimney (attached to the east end) has been rebuilt at its top in brick; and the verandah floor and some posts have been replaced. The 'front' fence may have replaced a paling or picket fence.
