Aesthetically, they are significant as three identical Edwardian houses in reasonably intact condition which are notable for the range of decorative detail to the facade. HOUSES - Physical Description 1
The houses at 29, 31 and 33 Carnarvon Street, Brunswick are essentially identical asymmetrical Edwardian ashlar block-fronted timber villas with hip and gable corrugated iron roofs and a separate verandah. The houses are notable for the range of decoration to the front facade, which includes:
- The carved scalloped bargeboard and half-timbering to the projecting gable end. The upper level of the wall features notched horizontal weatherboards
- The eaves decoration, which features carved brackets and diamond panels
- The projecting box window with textured glass highlights, and a painted timber shingle hood above.
- The separate bullnose verandah with carved timber posts and lacework with detailing that is stylistically consistent with lacework found in houses also dating from this time elsewhere in Brunswick (see entry on 1912 houses in Victoria Street precinct).
- The brick and rendered chimneys with terracotta pots
- The timber panelled front door with side and highlights, and the paired timber sash windows to the front elevation. Other windows are timber double hung sash.
Number 29 has a sympathetic low timber picket front fence, while the fences to Nos. 31 and 33 feature rendered brick pillars and low walls with timber picket inserts. No. 29 appears to be the most intact (It appears that one chimney has been removed from both 31 and 33) and the houses appear to be well maintained.Heritage Study and Grading
