Statement of Significance
What is significant?
The house at 151 Melbourne Avenue, Glenroy.
How is it significant?
The house at 151 Melbourne Avenue, Glenroy is of local aesthetic significance to the City of Moreland.
Why is it significant?
Of aesthetic significance for its unusual single-ridged form and bold detailing and for its reasonably intact exterior. The fence and entry gate is an early form of fencing and if not original, then near contemporary with the house. It is also of note as an unusual and early surviving example of a pre World War One bungalow residence in an outlying area of Melbourne which would not see substantial development until after World War Two.At the time of its construction this house was on a pocket of farmland and was surrounded by just a scattering of houses from the Victorian period. HOUSE & FRONT FENCE - Physical Description 1
The house at 151 Melbourne Avenue, Glenroy is an unusual single storey bungalow which is dominated by its wide low pitched gable which runs the width of the front elevation. The house is rough cast render with a weatherboard plinth.
The verandah, which encloses the front door, is on the east side of the house, and is incorporated under the main roof form rather than as a separate extension of the roof.
The roof is corrugated iron, painted green. There are three roughcast tapered chimney stacks. The street facing gable is distinguished by its large timber eaves brackets and half-timbering, infilled with six broad panels of timber louvres.
On the front elevation are two asymmetrical sets of bay windows which protrude slightly. Both window sets are casements, each a set of three with two varying sizes of fixed panes as the central section and leadlight in the upper section. Both windows have flat -iron hoods.
There is also an unusual variation on a 'horseshoe' opening with rounded corners to the far east of the front elevation however this is simply the end of the east facing verandah that has been infilled.with a window. A moulded timber string course runs across the north elevation.
The house sits on a wide block, set well back from the street, and has a low timber and woven wire front fence and large tubular metal and woven wire gate. Both the fence and gate are in poor condition, and it is not known if they are original although they are clearly an early form of fencing. The fences on the east and west boundaries are conventional timber palings with part of the east fence the cream brick wall of the neighbouring garage.
The winding path/ driveway begins at the crossover on the front western side of the property, and winds towards the front door on the north east verandah. The contorted alignment of the path most likely results from a boundary realignment when the neighbouring east side property was subdivided from the site in the 1950s. It is possible that the original path had a more sweeping curve leading to the east from the front entry verandah.HOUSE & FRONT FENCE - Physical Conditions
