Street Trees - Physical Description 1
Four mature street trees on the eastern section of Orient Grove, adjacent to Anstey station.
Remnant Fabric (Man Made):None noted.
Remnant Fabric (Vegetation):Four mature English Elms (Ulmus procera) were located on the west side of the street. The trees were located within the carriageway, with much of their root zone covered in asphalt. The trees were pollarded to maintain clearance from adjacent powerlines. The trees appear to be contemporary with the surrounding Victorian-era housing development.
Trees were noted to have been removed as of the 27th of Novemnber, 2002
Potential Threats: Further lopping to maintain powerline clearances. Lopping is not considered an appropriate management technique. Works within the root zones of these trees would further decrease vigour and overall health. Sealing of the aggregate parking surface on the eastern side of the street would reduce water infiltration to the root zone of the trees. Elm Leaf Beetle and Elm Bark Beetle are both serious pests of this species, capable of causing major damage and even killing mature trees. As yet, Dutch Elm disease is not known in Australia.Heritage Study and Grading
