FORMER PORTLAND INN SITE - History
The timber residence was erected inc. 1841 by William Frost. It was known as the 'Portland Hotel' at the time until the 1850s when it became the 'Classical Mathematical and Commercial Academy'. The residence can be identified on Birmingham's 1853 map. Site of one of the first commercial buildings in Portland.
Heritage Inventory History of Site: Built in 1841 for William Frost who ran it as the Portland Inn until 1843. It was the Portland Hotel from 1848 until 1856, licensee James Foggin. James Hawkins ran a school here between 1856 and 1871.

Former Portland Hotel now residential home; currently in good condition.
FORMER PORTLAND INN SITE - Archaeological Significance
Area of cottage (around the cottage) has high archaeological potential for intact subsurface deposits and features relating to its use as a pub during the mid 19th Century.

This site is one of Portland's earliest surviving timber buildings with important associations.

Timber hotel with cement shingle roof built in 1841. 1994 - the building has been restored and operates as a bed and breakfast establishment and a fabric shop.
Heritage Inventory Significance: One Portland's earliest surviving timber buildings with important associations.
