Statement of Significance
Cluden, built in various stages between 1871-72 and 1889, is of regional historical and architectural significance as a good example of a large Italian Renaissance Revival mansion with some unusual detailing. The house in its 1871-72 single storey form with tower (now demolished) has associations with Thomas Wilson, a legendary figure who was several times Mayor of Brighton and a local property developer. The two storey section of the house designed in 1889 by Frederick Williams for John Ferguson is notable for its stained glass and the addition of a new tower.
