Statement of Significance
The original Barwonleigh station tooks its name by virtue of being sited at the junction of the Barwon and Leigh Rivers. The original homestead consisted of 4 bluestone rooms constructed in about 1851 and this was later extended to 15 rooms including a ballroom, an addition of 1919. The house was destroyed by fire on March 1st, 1965. A reconstruction tookplace in 1966 and adhered as faithfully as possible to the original design and features.Original features which did survive include part of the original building with home made bricks and the water well. Also one original room survived which had been the setting for the first Presbyterian church services held between 1854-1856.
