Statement of Significance
Beechworth is located sympathetically to the topography, in a landscape of considerable beauty. Amidst a picturesque setting, of forested, gently undulating country; Beechworth's broad, tree lined streets, its interesting old parks and gardens and the considerable number of historic and architecturally important buildings, contribute to the significance of this goldfields town.
Beechworth is a nineteenth century provincial town. It is significant as one of the best preserved and intact examples of a Victorian Goldfields Town. The town's important historical role as the administrative and commercial centre of Victoria's north-eastern goldfields, provides a well preserved example of Government and private buildings. These buildings display a richness of material, with the common usage of local granite in construction. Its honey colour imparts a quality distinctive to Beechworth.
The Beechworth Scenic Drive is located west of the township. The gorge drive contains a major feature of interest, with granite outcrops of prolific number and magnitude. Predominant vegetation types in this area include Native Pine, Red Stringybark and wattles.
