Statement of Significance
The house was built in the years between 1875-1878 by Mr Phineas Solomon Phillips. The land on which it stood was the subject of many transactions between early settlers in the Kew district. The house passed in to the hands of the Cody family in 1910 and was once beautifully frunished with priceless antiques, including the desk on which Robert Hoddle drew up the first plans for the Melbourne. After the death of Miss Johanna Cody in 1964 -the house was sold to the Baptist Church and converted into a Youth Hostel.
