Statement of Significance
The house row at 186-192 Clarke Street Northcote, built by owner/builder Charles Harrison from 1888, is of State significance, architecturally, as the only known Victorian-era terrace in the State to possess two similar opposing facades and is consequently rare among contemporary terraces. The hillside corner siting (Runkers Hill) of the row enchances the expression of this distinctive characteristic which, with other elements in the row thought to be connected with off-course bookmaking, appears to be a reflection, historically, of the planned presence of a small trotting track which was to operate on the flat below the house.
