Statement of Significance
Rupertswood is an elaborate mansion built for landowner, stud-breeder and philanthropist Sir William Clarke in 1874, to designs by architect George Brown. The two-storey, symmetrically planned house has a huge tower with a very tall Mansart Roof and widows walk. A double storey cast iron verandah with gutter cappings and paired columns faces the house. There are extensive gardens with gates and lodge.
Rupertswood is one of the largest houses ever erected in Victoria. Comparable only with Werribee Park, Werribee, Rupertswood is a unique representation of an extraordinary and nowadays inconceivably affluent way of life. The estate had its own railway siding and half battery of Royal Artillery. Stylistically the house is an important eclectic design, with a classically derived main block and Gothic Revival details to the tower. The house is a landmark in Sunbury.
Rupertswood has been a college since the early 20th century and is in a somewhat depressed state, the grounds having suffered particularly. Alterations and additions have been made.
