Statement of Significance
The Heide property has national significance for its association with the notable art patrons and collectors, John and Sunday Reed, who from the 1930s provided a congenial and supportive environment for a wide range of renowned Australian artists, poets, writers and jazz musicians, many of whom lived and worked at Heide during their early formative years. The property contains Heide I, a 19th century timber building purchased by the Reeds in 1934 and still reflecting some of the atmosphere of the Reed era and Heide II,an award-winning house/gallery and one of the finest examples of 1960s domestic architecture. Both buildings are set amidst outstanding garden areas.
