Statement of Significance
Built in 1938-39 to the design of Public Works Chief Architect, Percy Everett, Essendon Technical School is of State architectural significance as a highly successful three dimensional design incorporating both the full range of geometric shapes and motifs, plus the finishes utilised by the Modernists in Europe and yet sparingly in Australia. The building is well suited to its corner site and is dominant in scale, achieving prominence in the area and hence landmark status.
The building is also of local singificance as the first technical school in Essendon; and of metropolitan significance as one of an intermediate group in the establishment of suburban schools in Melbourne and linked with its unusual wartime aviation training, because of its proximityto Essendon Airport.
Classified: 02/10/1995
